Safety Center

Foreign employment scams cost Nepali workers real money and real harm. This page walks through what to check at every stage โ€” before you apply, before you pay, before you sign, before you travel, and after you arrive.

1 Before Applying

Do this before you send your CV or documents to anyone.

  • Confirm the recruitment agency's DoFE license number and check its status in our Agency Directory or directly with the Department of Foreign Employment.
  • Be cautious of vacancies advertised only on social media (Facebook, TikTok, WhatsApp groups) with no verifiable agency behind them.
  • Ask for the employer's name and the demand letter reference โ€” a genuine vacancy can show this on request.
  • If a salary or benefit sounds far better than similar jobs for the same role and country, verify it directly with the agency before proceeding.

2 Before Paying

Any service fee should be transparent and traceable.

  • Nepal's DoFE sets approved fee limits for each destination country โ€” ask the agency to confirm the amount against the official limit before paying anything.
  • Get an official receipt for every payment, with the agency's registered name and license number printed on it.
  • Never pay in cash to an individual, or transfer money to a personal (non-business) bank account.
  • Be extremely cautious of any request for payment before a labour permit or demand letter has actually been approved.

3 Before Signing

Read your contract fully โ€” in a language you understand โ€” before signing anything.

  • Confirm the job title, salary, working hours, contract duration, and benefits (accommodation, food, transport) match what you were told verbally.
  • Make sure the employer named in the contract matches the employer named in the demand letter and job advertisement.
  • Keep a signed copy of every document you sign โ€” never sign something you don't have a copy of.
  • If anything in the contract feels unclear, ask DoFE, your agency, or a trusted advisor before signing โ€” not after.

4 Before Travel

Final checks before you leave Nepal.

  • Confirm your labour permit (DoFE approval) has actually been issued โ€” not just "in process" โ€” before you travel.
  • Complete required orientation/briefing sessions and medical checks (e.g. GAMCA where applicable) through recognized centers.
  • Save your employer's contact details, your agency's contact details, and the Nepali embassy/consulate contact for your destination country.
  • Keep digital and physical copies of your passport, visa, contract, and permit โ€” share copies with a trusted family member before you leave.

5 After Arrival

What to do once you've arrived at your destination.

  • Confirm your actual job role, salary, and working conditions match your signed contract โ€” report discrepancies to your agency and the Nepali embassy promptly.
  • Never hand over your passport to your employer unless it's required by local law and you understand your rights to retrieve it.
  • Keep in regular contact with family and your agency, and know how to reach the nearest Nepali embassy or consulate.
  • If you experience exploitation or unsafe conditions, contact the Nepali embassy, DoFE's complaint channel, or your recruitment agency's grievance process as soon as possible.

โš ๏ธ Never trust a job offer only because it appears on social media, WhatsApp, Facebook or TikTok. Verify the employer, recruitment agency and official documents.
